John C. Maxwell defines a leader as one who knows the way, goes the way and shows the way. Anybody can be a leader but what makes up a great leader? What sets a good leader apart from his followers?
An effective leader is a person who creates an inspiring vision about the future, and inspires people to engage in that vision. For you to be considered a good leader there are certain norms and values that you should adhere to.
The traits of a good leader are as follows.
A good leader should be honest. When you are at the forefront, honesty is paramount. As a leader, you are a role model to your team hence you should cultivate honesty.
One of the core values of leadership is assertiveness. As a good leader, you should be able to express yourself with confidence. You should stand up for what you believe in without fear.
Self-drive is of key importance and may help you achieve desirable results in your work. It is important that you set a good example for your subordinates by being self-driven.
As an effective leader, you should show commitment to your work. This serves as motivation for your subordinates. Commitment plays a key role in your work performance.
A good leader should be empathetic as opposed to dictatorial. You should be able to step in the shoes of your followers and understand them better. This shows your followers that their needs come first.
As a good leader, you should show compassion to your subordinates. One of the ways of being an effective leader is feeling the pain of your followers/subordinates. You should understand their grievances.
7. Good Problem-solving Skills
Should a problem arise, you should be able to solve it without favouritism. You should listen to both sides of the story and give a fair verdict. This makes you a good leader.
8. Good Communication Skills
A good leader is one who communicates to his followers. You may have a good communication strategy to prevent a communication breakdown. This makes it easier for you to be in sync with your followers/subordinates.
Creativity and innovation will set you apart from the crowd. You should be able to think outside the box. This will help you to come up with new ideas which could help you get ahead in your place of work.
Making the right decisions is part and parcel of being a good leader. If anything, making the right decisions is everything. If you make the wrong decision, it could mess you up in the long run.
Be a Good Leader
No one is born with leadership skills. You acquire them over time. As a good leader, you should always be at the forefront. Honesty, commitment, and focus will set you apart from your followers. Showing commitment as a leader will serve as a good example to your followers.
You should aim to be a different kind of leader.
