6 Ways to Resolve Conflict in a Workplace

Conflict in the workplace is inevitable. It may occur due to various reasons such as salary disputes, promotion opportunities as well as personal differences.

Whenever conflict arises, you should solve it amicably. Embrace the issue and take the initiative to confront the problem. You should also be able to draw a line between a work issue and a personal issue hence, conflict resolution can be done step by step.

How do you resolve conflict in the workplace?

Below are the steps to take when resolving a work-related conflict.

1. Acknowledge the Conflict

When a conflict occurs, it is important to own up to it. Do not avoid the matter or pretend as if nothing has happened.

Conflict is considered to be inevitable hence it should be faced head-on. When you realize that you and your co-worker have a conflict, you should solve it fairly and swiftly.

This will prevent a build-up of issues that will end up affecting your work performance. Interpersonal relations at the workplace are key hence any conflict should be solved almost immediately. This will help to promote good interpersonal relations.

2. Talk Over the Problem

You should be able to address a problem head-on before it escalates and becomes toxic. Create a conducive environment for you to solve your issues.

You should sit down and talk over the issue(s) that is the cause of conflict. Both of you should give your side of the story. This will help you understand each other hence it will be easier to resolve any conflict.

3. Listen Carefully

When re-solving things with a co-worker, it is important to listen to their side of the story. Do not make it all about you.

Listening carefully could help you to understand them better. See to it that you understand the root cause of the conflict. This will help you to resolve the conflict head-on.

Make sure the other party is done talking before you give your side of the story. Do not interrupt them as they talk. That way, you will be able to understand them. This will help you to even out your differences fairly.

4. Make an Apology

It is important to own up how you contributed to the dispute. You should therefore, show remorse and take responsibility for your actions.

You should make a sincere apology for your part in the conflict. This will help you to move on without feelings of guilt and regret.

5. Use a Mediator

Mediation involves finding a third party that is trusted by the people involved in a conflict. The mediator can be a manager, a Human Resource employee or a co-worker.

You should be able to trust the mediator to find a solution. A mediator must meet both of you together not individually. They should then give you time to air out your differences.

This will ensure that you come up with a solution to your differences by yourselves.

6. Confront the Problem, Not the Person

Put more focus on the problem and find amicable ways to solve it. Don’t make it a personal issue.

When in conflict, you may make statements out of anger and could end up making the other person angry. Tame your anger, and this will improve your chances of solving the issue successfully.

Focus on the Future, Not The Past

Conflict-resolution may be challenging. It should be fair and unbiased. However, when solving a conflict, it is important to focus on the future.

Don’t focus on what caused the problem, rather you should focus on what should be done to solve the problem.

When solving a conflict, you should put into consideration the interests of both parties. That way, solving conflicts becomes much easier.
