Is your baby having a hard time breathing? Finding the proper way to clean your baby’s nose can be a bit of a struggle, especially since their nasal passages are so tiny.
Babies below four months have not yet developed the reflex of breathing through their mouths. Your baby only knows how to breathe through its nose.
A stuffy nose can lead to your baby being irritable, restless, sleepless and unable to feed properly.
It is important to know how to clean your baby’s nose. A buildup of mucus can lead to your baby getting nasal infections.
Below are a few tips on how to clean your baby’s nose at home.
1. Decongest using a Saline Nasal Spray
A saline nasal spray is a solution that you put in your baby’s nose to thin the mucus and decongest the nose. The solution is a mixture of salt and sterilized water which can be made at home.
This is the safest option since it does not involve picking and prodding inside your baby’s nose.
It’s simple to administer. Just lay your baby on its back and tilt the head upwards a little. Put two to three drops of the saline solution in the nose. Then let the baby stay still for a couple of seconds and its nose will clear up.
You can also get the saline nasal spray over the counter.
2.Suction with a Nasal Aspirator/Bulb Syringe
A bulb syringe is made of silicone and shaped like a bulb at the end that can be easily pressed with a hand.
It is also easy to use. Squeeze the air out of the bulb to create a vacuum inside. Then carefully place the tip inside your baby’s nostril and release the bulb so that the mucus can be suctioned.
Empty the mucus into a tissue before repeating the same procedure on the other nostril.
You can also use a few drops of the saline solution to thin out the mucus then suction it using a bulb syringe. You can get a bulb syringe from a pharmacy.
3. Run an Air Humidifier
An air humidifier is a machine that releases moisture into the air to prevent dryness. Dry air can make your baby’s nose a bit stuffy. Running an air humidifier in your baby’s room can help in decongesting its nose.
Ensure that the air humidifier is constantly clean to avoid mold growing inside the machine.
You can get the machine at a pharmacy or supermarket.
4. Run a Warm Bath
Running a warm bath for your baby may also help clear the stuffy nose. For most babies bath time means play time.
A little distraction will help your baby forget the discomfort in the nose.
Ensure that your baby stays hydrated at all times by frequently giving it fluids to drink.
5. Sit in a Steam Room
Turn your bathroom into a steam room by running the shower on full hot mode. Close the bathroom door and let the steam build-up.
Sit with your baby in the bathroom for 5-10 minutes or until your baby starts to get some relief. This will help decongest your baby’s nose and make them breathe a lot better.
It’s a convenient method especially if your baby gets a stuffy nose at night and none of the other methods are available.
6. Cuddles and Love Pats
Babies love to be cuddled, to them it is a love language which shows that they’re loved and wanted.
Cuddling your baby will help it get distracted from the stuffiness. It’ll feel relaxed which will lead to relief and healing.
What to Avoid When Cleaning Your Baby’s Nose
There are a lot of ways you may clean your nose that may not be suitable for your baby. For example, vapor rubs offer instant relief for you but it’s too much for your baby; the ingredients may be a bit harsh on your baby’s delicate skin.
Now that you know how to clean your baby’s nose, stuffy noses are now a thing of the past.
