MP’s Raise Concern Over Rich Kenyans Seeking Treatment Abroad

Many rich Kenyans have been going abroad seeking for treatment under the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF).

Members of parliament have raised a concern on this issue saying that the rich are doing this at the expense of the poor.

A document presented before the National Assembly Health Committee on Wednesday showed that NHIF paid out Sh17 billion for specialized packages for patients who sought treatment abroad in the 2018/2019 financial year.

The NHIF therefore is expected by the MPs to explain why it paid extra money to private hospitals.

The financial compensation to hospitals report, indicate that private hospitals gobbled up Sh22 billion compared to government hospitals, which received only Sh7 billion. Mission hospitals collected Sh8 billion from NHIF.

The legislators directed NHIF to provide the list of the private hospitals that have benefited from the fund and the names of individuals who were facilitated by the insurance fund to go for treatment abroad.
