ACCORDING TO A REPORT LAUNCHED TODAY BY THE KENYA CIVIL SOCIETY PLATFORM ON OIL AND GAS THE COUNTRY IS NOT PREPARED TO DEAL WITH THE COMPLEXITIES OF OIL AND GAS THAT IS ESTIMATED TO YIELD 1 BILLION US DOLLARS ANNUALLY ONCE PRODUCTION BEGINS. LACK OF AN INCLUSIVE LEGAL AND INSTITUTIONAL FRAMEWORK HAS BEEN HIGHLIGHTED AS THE GREATEST IMPEDIMENT TOWARDS TRANSPARENCY ON THE ONGOING CONTRACTS IN TURKANA. THE CIVIL SOCIETY HAS ALSO QUESTIONED EXCESSIVE POWER BESTOWED UPON THE CABINET SECRETARY FOR ENERGY IN LICENSING PETROLEUM PRODUCTS AND APPOINTMENTS OF BOARD MEMBERS THAT IS SUBJECT TO CORRUPTION. KENYA CIVIL SOCIETY PLATFORM HAS CALLED FOR THE FORMATION OF AN INDEPENDENT AUTHORITY TO REGULATE PETROLEUM REGULATIONS WITH THE DIRECTOR GENERAL TO BE APPOINTED BY THE PRESIDENT.
